    July 2011 - Forbes picks the Des Moines Metro area as the best city for young professional in the USA.  Des Moines has the hightest concentration of big buisinesses of any city assessed by Forbes. According to Forbes, Des Moines has business cost 16% below the national average and a current unemployment rate of only 5.8% - far below the national average. Job growth rates are projected to be 0.97% in 2011 and 2.86% in 2012
  • Des Moines named "Best Place to Raise a Family." - Forbes

    June 2010 - Forbes picks Des Moines as the best place to raise a family in the USA. This analysis is based on rankings including the cost of living, prevalence of home ownership, median household income, housing costs, commute times, crime statistics and the percentage of young adults graduating from high school. Des Moines boasts good schools, affordable housing and a strong sense of community.
  • Des Moines ranked No. 7 in "10 Best Cities for the Next Decade." - Kiplinger

    May - Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine July edition will rank Des Moines as the seventh best city for the next decade. Kiplinger's noted Des Moines' efforts for lure back young Iowans, the increasing prevalence of high-tech jobs and the family-friendly nature of the Des Moines Metro. 

  • Des Moines ranks No. 1 as the "Best Place for Business and Careers." - Forbes

    April 2010 - Forbes picks Greater Des Moines as the Number One place for business and careers based on business costs 15 percent below the national average, cost of living ten percent below the national average. 33 percent of adults having college degrees and 92 percent having high school diplomas. Des Moines' economic outlook is quite good with employment expected to increase at a 2.7% annually over next three years, 10th best in the country. Household incomes are projected to rise 2.9%, which ranks 11th. Housing is affordable; the  median home price is just $149,000, one-quarter the price of the San Francisco area. Commuting times average 19.8 minutes, one of the fastest in the U.S according the the U.S. Census Bureau.

    Forbes has ranked it one of the best places for business and careers three years running.
  • Des Moines is America's best city (in which) to do business - MarketWatch

    December 2009 - MarketWatch names Des Moines "America's best city to do business," among more than 100 cities surveyed with metro populations of over 500,000. MarketWatch cited Des Moines' relatively low unemployment rate and low cost of doing business as well as manageable communities and relatively short commuting times.

  • Des Moines is most livable bargain market - MSN Real Estate

    November 2009 - MSN Real Estate says that "Des Moines may be one of the best and most overlooked places to jump-start your career." The article sited Des Moines'  as being "solid' and noted the large number of well-paying jobs in insurance, bioscience and agribusiness. With all this, the median house costs just $150,000.  MSN noted that Des Moines "has some of the cleanest air in the country" along with low sress levels and adequate outdoor recreation, culture and fine art.
  • Des Moines, Iowa City and Waterloo are among the top 10 cities in America for volunteer service. Iowa was the only  state to have three cities in the top ten. - Corporation for National and Community Service - December 2009
