Carlisle, Iowa is located approximately 12 miles southeast of downtown Des Moines on IA Hwy 5. US Census Bureau 2005 estimated population for Carlisle was 3,544, an increase of 13% since 2000.

Carlisle is located on the newly improved Iowa Highway 5 less than two miles from the recently completed southeast bypass for Des Moines. These improvements have made the commute from Carlisle to any Des Moines location even shorter than before and place Carlisle only about 10 minutes from Des Moines International Airport.

Most recently Carlisle has received national and world attention as the hometown of the McCaughey septuplets, the first recorded set of septuplets to survive at birth.

Carlisle Iowa History

Dudley, the original settlement in the Carlisle area was founded by John Griffin, the Assistant Surgeon of the Fort Des Moines Dragoons and laid out by Jeremiah Church in February, 1846 even before the City of Fort Des Moines was first laid out in July, 1846 at Keokuk´s Bend on the Des Moines River.  Dudley was destroyed by the great flood of 1851.  That same year the settlement was relocated to its present site and laid out by Jeremiah Church on the Daniel Moore homestead.  It was renamed Carlisle, after the city of the same name in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Carlisle was served by two lines of the same railroad, the Rock Island Line, until the late 1950's when the branch line to Indianola was abandoned. The sub-mainline to Allerton from Des Moines is still used by the Union Pacific Railroad since the dissolution of the Rock Island.
