Polk City, Iowa is located about 15 miles north-northeast of downtown Des Moines very near Saylorville Reservoir. The US Census Bureau 2005 estimated population for Polk City was 2,872, an increase of 22.5% since 2000.
Polk City is also very near Big Creek State Park and is the closest community to Saylorville Reservior making it an important recreation destination for Central Iowa.

Polk City was incorporated in 1875 and was given the name Polk City after the eleventh President, James Knox Polk.
The first settlers came to this area in the 1840s and discovered the remnants of an abandoned Waukonsa Indian village.
