Grimes, Iowa is located just north of the interchange of I-35/80 and IA Hwy 141 at the northwest corner of the Des Moines Metro area. The US Census Bureau 2005 estimated population for Grimes was 6,175, an increase of 21.1% since 2000.

Grimes is a farming community that has turned into a suburb through recent residential and commercial development. Considerable commercial development is beginning on the Hwy. 141 corridor near Grimes. Grimes' proximity to the Interstate Highway system makes it a desirable location for the commuter.

Grimes incorporated as a city on May 7, 1894. It is named for former Iowa Governor and United States Senator James W. Grimes.
