Urbandale, Iowa is the Des Moines metropolitan area's most unique suburb. The US Census Bureau 2006 estimated population for Urbandale was 37,173, an increase of 27.9% since 2000.

Located contiguous to northwest Des Moines and the charming Beaverdale area, it has excellent access to both downtown Des Moines and the Interstate Highway System. Urbandale is also well served by the Des Moines Metropolitan Transit Authority's bus system.

Urbandale's unique stature is enhanced by its layout - there is no single downtown. Rather, there are several business districts serving all neighborhoods. Several main thoroughfares afford easy access to Interstates 35 & 80 as well as I-235.

Considerable business development has occurred in the last 20 years including several business and office parks along Interstate 35/80 and in the area served by 100th and 104th Streets. Also, projects to upgrade key business intersections and a civic complex were recently completed.

Urbandale boasts an excellent park and trail system and has its own independent school district that residents say combines the best of small town values and approach to education with the facilities of a major suburb.

Urbandale is also home to one of the most unique museums in the country -
Living History Farms. Located at the I-35/80 and Hickman Road interchange, this former dairy farm estate cum prison farm now showcases recreations of an Iowa and Midwest long past and shows the agricultural settlement and development of the midwestern United States. Exhibits include an Indian village from the 1700s, an 1850 pioneer farm, an 1875 farm town site and a horse-powered farm in addition to many other exhibits, historical activities and expositions as well as authentic historical farm dinners and other special events. Pope John Paul II gave his blessing to all farmers and agriculture at Living History Farms October 4, 1979.

Urbandale started life as a coal mining community and became Des Moines' first "street car suburb" when the city trolley line was extended to the northwest in the early 1900s. The end of the streetcar line at 70th Street is where Urbandale's first business district was born.

The city was incorporated in 1917. The post World War II period saw the closing of the mines and the development of Urbandale as a major suburban community.  Much of the business and office park development occurred in the 1980's and 90's.
