West Des Moines, Iowa is the largest of the Des Moines suburbs. The US Census Bureau 2005 estimated population for West Des Moines was 53,945, an increase of 16.2% since 2000.

Located directly adjacent to Des Moines' southwestern city limits and straddling Interstates 80, 35 and 235, West Des Moines has become an economic centerpiece for the Des Moines metro area. In addition to its historic manufacturing and downtown districts, the last 30 years have seen West Des Moines blossom into a shopping and entertainment powerhouse for the area. In addition to two of the metro's four regional shopping malls, West Des Moines is home to several community shopping areas, numerous office/business parks, and an extensive manufacturing district, as well as a tremendous number of historic and newer neighborhoods offering a wide variety of housing options.

By the 1990's West Des Moines was one of the fastest growing suburbs in the USA. The latest growth has been capped by construction of a new municipal complex on Mills Civic Parkway west and north of the old, historic Valley Junction downtown district - closer to the Interstate Highway system and the growing western portions of the area. West Des Moines has been noted for its civic and infrastructure development and for its attention to growth planning. The area just west of I-35 and south of I-80 has experienced extensive growth in the last few years including the new regional mall, Jordan Creek Town Center, and West Glen, a mixed-use center near I-35 that becoming a true activity/living center with quick interstate access.

West Des Community Schools are among the most highly regarded in Iowa.

West Des Moines is also the home of the
Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

West Des Moines Iowa History

West Des Moines had very humble beginnings as a small settlement on the outskirts of Des Moines founded by James C. Jordan in 1846. Mr. Jordan built a permanent home that became a way station on the famous "underground railroad" assisting runaway slaves in reaching freedom. Jordan was personally involved in railroad development in Iowa and his hometown became known as Valley Junction, eventually housing a major Rock Island Railroad facility. The town had an early reputation as a boisterous railroad and coal-mining town and was home to some of the first Mexican-American immigrants in the Midwest.

Valley Junction became incorporated as in 1893. Since then this tiny suburb has grown into one of the largest cities in Iowa. The old "downtown" Valley Junction has become a revitalized "boutique" shopping district,
Historic Valley Junction, complete with it's own farmer's market each week in the spring and summer. In 1938 Valley Junction became officially known as West Des Moines. The decline of the railroads and increasing suburban growth west of Des Moines city resulted in West Des Moines becoming one of Des Moines major suburbs by the 1950's.

West Des Moines Iowa Real Estate

West Des Moines offers the full range of suburban housing opportunities including some of the newest ideas in mixed use development. Old West Des Moines, including the historic Valley Junction area, offers older, more affordable housing stock including many Victorian homes, pre-WWII bungalows and other styles. As you move north and west from the older areas, there are many post WWII ranch and two-story homes available. There are even some recent townhome developments infilling in some of the older areas.

Just inside I-35 south and south of I-235 are very desirable areas of single-family, townhome and condo communities built in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. Much of the development outside I-35 south dates from the late 1980's and newer. The newest, most vibrant development is taking place near the new Jordan Creek Mall located about one mile west of I-35 south and two miles south of I-80 west. There are neighborhoods of luxury homes and more affordable homes, including townhomes. Some newer condos are located within mixed-use developments which include commercial services.

All of these neighborhoods have excellent access to shopping, community services and the Interstate highway system. West Des Moines also offers the gated, luxury golf course community of Glenn Oaks just south of Jordan Creek Mall as well as many other upscale communities with luxury homes.
